The Blind Spot in Using AI for Decision Making

That knot in your stomach. The career you’re questioning, the relationship that feels off, the conflict at work draining your energy: it’s a feeling that’s hard to ignore. Whether you're comparing new laptops or questioning your entire career path, you've likely made pro-con lists and asked friends for advice. You may have even turned to an AI, asking it to chart a path forward. I certainly did.

Five years ago, whenever I was pondering a decision, I would call a friend or run it by a coworker. These days? Not so much. Now, the very first thing I do is open ChatGPT or Gemini. Or sometimes both.

AI can be a powerful ally in decision-making, organizing the chaos into neat bullet points. But it often leaves you with a sense that the most important piece of the puzzle is missing. Let's break down when to leverage technology and when you need the irreplaceable depth of human support, using a framework that honors both logic and the wisdom of your body.

Step 1: Recognizing the Decision

Where AI Helps:

AI is a master of pattern recognition. If you feel a general, nagging dissatisfaction, you can ask an AI to analyze your journal entries from the past month. It might act like a mirror, reflecting themes you missed, like, "You've mentioned feeling undervalued in meetings three times this week," helping you see that a simmering issue has reached a decision point.

Where Human Support is Essential:

AI has no access to the wisdom of your body. It can't feel the knot in your stomach when you think about your job, or the subtle lightness you feel when you imagine a different future. A skilled coach helps you exhale and listen to this somatic intelligence. We are trained to notice the catch in your voice that reveals what truly matters, long before your conscious mind has caught up.

Step 2: Gathering Information

Where AI Helps:

This is where AI shines. For a logical decision, like choosing a new laptop, AI is a brilliant research assistant. It can tirelessly compare technical specs, summarize user reviews, find the best prices, and explain the pros and cons of different processors, giving you the complete lay of the land.

Where Human Support is Essential:

Information isn't wisdom. For a complex decision, like leaving a "good on paper" job, an AI can list 50 pros and cons, but can't help you explore why the thought of staying makes you feel so drained. A coach helps you dig beneath the surface, asking questions that reveal when a "career decision" is actually about healing an old pattern around your sense of worth.

Step 3: Identifying Options

Where AI Helps:

Stuck in a rut? AI is an incredible brainstorming partner. Give it your goals and constraints, and it will generate creative, unconventional, and hybrid possibilities you hadn't considered, breaking you out of black-and-white thinking.

Where Human Support is Essential:

AI presents all options as equally valid on paper. It doesn't know that highly structured plans have never worked for you, or that a suggestion involving public speaking might trigger deep-seated fears. A coach helps you exhale into the feeling of each option, noticing what creates a sense of expansion versus contraction. We help you explore why one path feels liberating while another, equally logical path, feels heavy.

Step 4: Evaluating Choices

Where AI Helps:

AI can walk you through decision-making models. For the laptop choice, you can ask it to create a weighted-criteria matrix, assigning scores for battery life, screen size, and price. It’s a neutral, systematic tool for logical evaluation.

Where Human Support is Essential:

AI has a critical flaw: it's programmed to agree with you. If you’re leaning toward a choice based on fear, AI will help you find justifications. It validates; it doesn't challenge. A skilled coach does more than support—we hold up a mirror. We are trained to lovingly notice when you're rationalizing, when fear is masquerading as practicality, or when you’re choosing from an old story instead of your present truth. We help you explore not just what you want, but why.

Step 5: Making the Decision

Where AI Helps:

At 2 AM, when doubt creeps in, an AI can be a useful anchor. It can remind you of your stated goals, summarize your analysis, and offer prompts to reaffirm your thinking.

Where Human Support is Essential:

A true decision is an embodied commitment, not just a logical conclusion. AI cannot witness the moment the choice clicks into place in your soul. It can't hold space for the grief that comes with letting one path go, or celebrate the courage it takes to finally engage with your authentic choice. This is where transformation happens: in the presence of another human who sees your courage and honors the weight of the moment.

Step 6: Taking Action

Where AI Helps:

Once you've decided to change careers, AI is excellent for logistics. It can help you draft a resignation letter, create a project plan for your job search, and suggest networking templates. It builds the scaffolding for your action.

Where Human Support is Essential:

Action triggers resistance. The moment you hand in your notice, impostor syndrome might scream in your ear. AI can offer digital high-fives, but it can't help you navigate that profound discomfort of growth. A coach walks with you through that resistance, helping you engage with those fears as information, not roadblocks.

Logic vs. Embodied Wisdom in Human vs. AI Decision Making

AI is a phenomenal tool. Think of it as the world's most efficient research assistant, perfect for building a spreadsheet for your next laptop purchase.

But it cannot read the energy in a room. It cannot sense what you leave unsaid. It can’t feel the difference between a choice that makes your spirit soar and one that makes it shrink. An AI can help you process information, but it cannot guide you through a transformation.

Whether you need data for a simple choice or clarity for a life-changing one, the path forward becomes clearer when you use the right tool for the job. If you’re at a crossroads that feels stuck or overwhelming, perhaps what you need isn't more data. Perhaps you need the space to hear your own inner wisdom and the courage to act on it.

My role isn't to give you answers, but to help you find your own.
